NZ Masters Tournament 2007

The 2007 Masters was held in Tauranga at Bridge Club rooms. The 24 players included one first-timer — Murray Rogers

Day 1

After the first eight games on day 1, leader of the pack was Glennis Hale on 8 wins, ahead of Jeff Grant on spread. Glennis started with a score of 609 against John Foster and in game 3 achieved a 573-417 win over Marianne Bentley. Jeff started with a 2-point win against Ann Hough, but in game 4 he took off with a 500-314 game against Steven Brown, then followed up in game 6 with a 511-318 victory over David Gunn. At the end of the day there were 2 players on 6 wins—in order of spread: Lynne Butler and Rogelio Talosig.

Day 2

Glennis and Jeff both continued their great run on day 2, both of them winning 7 games. Both their losses came in the 11th round. Glennis was in the lead by only 1 spread point. Lynne and Rogelio maintained their progress, occupying 4th and 3rd positions at the end of the day. Andrew Bradley won 6 games, to come up to 5th place.

Octogenarian June Mackwell achieved her win expectancy just before lunch on day two, earning her the President's bottle of wine.

The highest score of the tournament was Mike Sigley's 618 against Denise Gordon's 410 - this also turned out to be the highest aggregate score achieved.

Day 3

At lunch on day 3 Glennis went ahead by one win over Jeff when he lost in the 19th round. At that point the next nearest contenders were four wins behind Jeff - Lynne, Andrew and Rogelio. So the only potential winners of the tourney were Glennis and Jeff with four rounds to play.

Glennis lost the first game after lunch 420-430 to Joan Thomas, but she retained first place on spread. Rogelio rose to third. Lynne and Andrew remained in contention for a minor placing and Mike also was in the running.

Glennis had another loss in the next round, while Jeff won his game go go ahead by one win. Andrew, Mike and Rogelio remained in contention for third place.

The penultimate game saw Glennis and Jeff facing off. Glennis had to win to stay have a chance of winning the tournament. However, she could only manage 266 points against Jeff's 479 and had to be content with second place. Rogelio, Mike and Andrew were now fighting it out for third spot. Mike had to win the last round and hope that Rogelio lost, while Andrew had to win by a large margin and hope that both Mike and Rogelio lost.

Jeff won his final round to win the tourney with 20 wins, only one short of the record. Glennis lost again, finishing on a creditable 18 wins. Rogelio had a comfortable win, taking third place.

A separate competition was played between teams from the Mt Albert and Nelson clubs for the New Zealand Shield. Mt Albert was represented by Andrew Bradley, Chris Hooks and Liz Fagerlund, while Nelson was represented by Debbie Caldwell, Ann Hough and Murry Rogers. The Mt Albert team proved too strong and Andrew collected the shield.
